Role Summary/Purpose
Essential Responsibilities:
- Provide product development and technical analysis related to power electronic and power systems control in offshore wind business.
- Ensure sub-system full integrated solution, controls as well as turbine system requirement (including grid code).
- Perform Engineering Excellence and provide innovative design solutions to deliver world-class quality.
- Turbine system modeling with a focus on Power Conversion part and turbine grid integration.
- Customer requirements review, clause by clause review.
- Develop a technical understanding of electrical characteristics of GE’s power electronic generation and transmission products and their integration into electrical grids.
- Support customers with power systems engineering expertise; including equipment design, specification studies, commissioning support, troubleshooting, and failure mode analyses.
- Supporting continuous development of transmission and distribution products based on evolving grid codes and standards through participation in industry standards groups and leading innovative approaches to power equipment design.
- Effectively communicate to both internal and external customers by preparing detailed written reports or presentations describing analyses performed, solutions developed, and customer value propositions.
- Actively participate on and support project teams ensuring high-quality deliverables, budget, and on-time project metrics are met.
- Actively participate in a working environment where teamwork, quality, customer service, and innovation are prized.
- Owning the turbine grid integration models (PSCAD, PowerFactory, PSSE, harmonic model, state space) for Hal-X.
- Ensure proper flow down of grid code requirements to the main power converter control specification, inputs to the design specification of main turbine components.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Master’s degree in electrical or electric power engineering.
- Minimum 8 years of experience in electrical or electric power engineering. Demonstrated experience in technical performance analysis of electric power systems with power electronic sources or loads.
- Experience in planning and execution of technical projects relevant to electric power systems and equipment design.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills (e.g. ability to effectively communicate with all levels of GE and customer/plant staff, and customers).
- Understanding of grid systems interactions with power plant equipment and controls.
- Experience with simulation tools (PSCAD / PowerFactory required, and MATLAB / PSSE desired).
- Experience with programming environments to understand controller code and complex simulation modeling (Python or Fortran desired).
- Experience with time-domain simulation tools, specifically programming, tuning, and using user-written “black box” models in PSCAD for wind turbine generators, or other advanced power electronic-based systems.
- Wind industry expertise with proven results developing & implementing technology programs.
- Experience in conducting system validation, test bench testing, and field measurements.
- Knowledge of Standards and Design Codes.
- Experience in analyzing grid codes, extracting requirement end define system/component specification for meeting that grid codes.
- Skilled in electrical component design calculations, specifications, and schematics.
- Demonstrated system thinking: ability to assess tradeoffs, effectively assess risk, and optimize results.
- Business acumen and customer focus.
- Demonstrated ability to work horizontally across stakeholders to influence outcomes.
- Coordination skills with different parties (internal & external).
- Strong interpersonal skills including: ownership, self-motivated, problem-solving, analytical, team player, communication skills, and ability to develop relationships.
- Willingness to travel as needed (up to 10%).
- Fluent in English (spoken and written).
Desired:
- Master’s or PhD degree in electrical or electric power engineering, or a related field of study.
- Industry reputation, prior IEEE/CIGRE published articles related to practical (not overly-academic) topics, participation in industry standards working groups.
- Experience in HV power system design, including power system interaction with HVDC.
- Experience with modeling and simulating inverter-based systems.
